Training Opportunities
Training Opportunities covers everything from job-specific skills, such as carpentry, horticultural and hairdressing, to skills essential in any workplace - working in teams, literacy, health and safety and communication. Class sizes are small and learners receive individual attention, including literacy and numeracy assistance as required. Training has a practical emphasis with an on-job training component built into most programmes. In this environment many learners experience success for the first time in their lives. The quality of training is monitored externally and trainees earn credits towards nationally recognised qualifications. Private training providers, polytechnics and wananga are among the training providers and training venues include classrooms, marae and workplaces. More than 30,000 people start Training Opportunities each year as a vital step towards gaining the skills they need to get a job. Learners may receive assistance towards their travel costs .
Skill Enhancement
Rangatahi Māia
Rangatahi Māia is vocational training and education for young Maori. It is designed to develop the skills required for an identified industry, leading to qualifications recognised by the industry and incorporates workplace learning in the industry. The training is at level 3 and above on the National Qualifications Framework or equivalent.
Rangatahi Māia programmes incorporate support which will maximise the opportunity for young Maori to achieve their learning and employment goals.
Rangatahi Māia programmes are available in all TEC areas.
Tupulaga Le Lumana'i
Tupulaga Le Lumana'i is the Skill Enhancement initiative designed for Pacific young people.
Like Rangatahi Māia, it offers vocational training at level 3 and above and incorporates support for Pacific young people to achieve their learning and employment goals.
Tupulaga Le Lumana'i programmes are offered in the TEC's Tamaki Makaurau, Manukau, Wellington and Canterbury areas.
Some Rangatahi Māia and Tupulaga Le Lumana'i programmes give learners the opportunity to gain a complete qualification and enter related employment. Other programmes lead to further tertiary education which will equip learners for relevant employment.
Youth Training
Youth Training offers a range of training options for recent school leavers with no or low qualifications.
Young people can explore work options and expand their understanding of the world of work, while gaining skills and qualifications they need to move into further education or employment.
The training offers both industry-specific and general workplace skills such as communication, self-management, working in teams, and literacy.
Learners achieve credits towards nationally recognised qualifications on the National Qualifications Framework.
About 13,000 young people start Youth Training each year. Two thirds of these learners move into a job or further education on leaving the programme.
Youth Training is free and available from a diverse range of approved training providers around New Zealand. Learners may receive assistance towards travel costs .
